Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries / Conseil des bibliothèques postsecondaires de l’Atlantique (CAAL-CBPA), Copyright Committee, as hosts of the 2024 ABC Copyright Conference, invite proposals for Conference sessions. A list of suggested session topics is offered below, but all proposals relevant to the overarching theme of copyright in Canadian education will be considered. Consideration will also be given to proposals referencing multinational aspects of copyright, and copyright legislation and practices in other jurisdictions having relevance or interest to Canada.
For the 2024 Conference, we want to hear from the broadest possible range of perspectives regarding the law, study, and practice of copyright. We encourage submissions from those working in public libraries and from librarians and teachers/instructors working in all sectors of education, including K-12 schools, universities, and technical and community colleges. Submissions from lawyers, legal scholars, and students with an interest in copyright issues are also encouraged, as are proposals from “copyright practitioners” (i.e. those creating or using copyrighted material in educational activities or cultural industries, including music, writing /publishing, etc.)
Suggestions for proposal themes:
- Copyright implications of AI
- Indigenization, Reconciliation, and IP / copyright
- Advocacy/Countering misinformation on copyright
- What now for licensing?
- The lobbying landscape
- “Copyright adjacent” legislation (e.g. C-11, C-18)
- Open Access / OER
- Pricing and access
- Copyrighted content: creators’ perspectives
- Copyrighted content: students’ / learners’ perspectives
To encourage a variety of opportunities for learning and engagement, we welcome proposals for program content ranging in scale and format from longer workshops, through lecture-style presentations, to short lightning talks or poster presentations. And, if you have suggestions for other programming options for exploring relevant ideas and questions at ABC 2024, please contact the Program Subcommittee.
Many thanks for your interest: we look forward to welcoming both new and returning ABC Copyright community members to Halifax in June!
